I would like to say that overall I have enjoyed it and although I hated these blogs at first I quite like doing them now as I can just write whatever I like and what I feel. I also like to read what other people have put. Maybe I might even continue these afterwards. Hope everyone's assignments have gone well. Hope to see some of you lot in my other lectures and thanks to Leanne Boyd for being a supportive friend throughout the module. I know this module is about being bad and this blog is all good but it makes a change doesn't it and shows a little of the other side of the way people could behave.
Cheers to all the lecturers for interesting lectures and a module that isn't like any other.
Signing off Sharon xxxxxx

Assignments

Well our assignment is in. I decided to do a film review this time. I choose the topic of bandits and outlaws and did about Young Guns. I have to admit I'm not usually into these kind of films but it was actually very good. My boyfriend (Hello Garth) told me about it so I thought well I might as well try it. It's about Billy the Kid. It has lots of action, killings. It shows how killing someone can get out of control as Billy managed to get a buzz from what the papers were writing about him so he killed more to live up to his name and finally bring John Trunstall's killer to justice. I'm going to leave it at that but I seriously recommend you watch it.

Other's Blogs

I thought that been as we are coming to the end of these blogs, I would read some other people's to see what their views are. I liked Graham Hollister's blog Have a look when he talks about his training courses and although they were allowed £20 a dayaccommodationn fees he only used £7Wellll fair comment you obviously had to sleep in a not so good place to get it that cheap so you deserve the £13 you didn't spend. That was just a little lie you told.
Mercy Ndlovu take a look talks about the news that Harold Shipman is dead. It says how 'Some crimes just go unpunished and there Shipman has gone without paying for what he did'. I totally agree with this, I might sound bad by saying this but for serious crimes like this I think they should be tortured and realise what they have done to someone else.
I've just read Jemma Dicken's blog click here to view and it made me smile some of the lies that children say are quite funny I especially like the one about the stickers. click here to view

Being Bad Questionnaire. And if not, why not?

It has absolutely nothing to do with special needs. I took the module as part of my English course as it was an option but I don't think it really has any relevance. Sorry. Although I say this I have enjoyed some aspects of the module.

Have you found Being Bad too demanding, too easy, or at an appropriate level?

I found actually choosing what to do for my assignments difficult. I think the weblogs are at an appropriate level. In lectures the discussion has been at an appropriate level.

Do you think the list of topics covered on the module was appropriate?

I think most of the topics were very interesting. I do agree with the comment made in the lecture that the religious week was boring and I found it very insulting when the lecturer kept putting his slide up about discussion must now end. I felt as if I was in primary school, treated like a child and I don't think this is acceptable after all everyone in the room are adults and should be respected.

Are there any topics not included in the module that you would like to see included?

Someone made a suggestion about sexual deviance which I think would be quite interesting. other than that I can't really think of any that would be any better than what we did.

Do you think that the format for classes has worked well?

I think discussion was very important. We learn't ideas off other people but the lecture didn't seem to have any structure. Discussions in small groups was difficult as we couldn't move around so the group was too big.

What did you think of the module team?

I like the fact that there were many lecturers instead of just one as they worked well together and helped each other with ideas and also posed questions and arguments to get the lecturer who made a point to think themselves of other views.

Do you think it would have been better to have had more:

Small group discussions?

Not so much very small groups as there would be less people to have a view to bring to the group but to make groups discussions work better by the layout of the room so everyone in the group can here and not feel excluded.

Discussion and debate among the class as a whole?

I think the amount the lecture had was enough as people viewed their opinion throughout the lecture anyway when weren't instructed to do so.

Information and talk from lecturers?

Sometimes it was difficult to take notes on subjects because of the discussions. so more facts and information need to be present in order to be able to take something away on paper from the lecture to view at another time.

The approach taken in the module is interdisciplinary (drawing on perspectives from English Literature, Film Studies, Creative Writing, Philosophy, Religious Studies, Media Studies and Politics): do you think this a useful way of approaching the topics covered in the module?

Yes. As instead of a whole lecture on facts and figures and what the lecturers thought we were givent he opportunity to express what we thought.

Do you think that interdisciplinary modules are a good idea?

Yes. They get you to think about topics more.

Do you think you have benefited from the interdisciplinary approach taken in the module?

I prefer to have a structure so sometimes I felt a bit uncomftable with this approach.

Would you like to see more modules that cover this kind of subject matter?

I think it would be good to have more of a choice for the people who like these kind of modules.

Are you planning to take the follow-up module PH2004 Thou Shalt Not (note: the name of this module is likely to be changed to It Shouldn't be Allowed!) at level 2?

I'm not too sure yet. But possibly.

Would you recommend Being Bad to a friend?

If I knew it would benefit them and would enjoy it then yes as the module can be very stimulating.

Do you think that the blogs (web logs) were a good idea?

Yes. People who find it difficult to express their opinion in lectures can do so here. They are also something different to writing essays. They are a bit more laid back. I find them quite unusual. you can just write what you think and feel without having to back it up with what other people have said.

What did you think of the other assessments (e.g. would it be better to have one longer assessment rather than two shorter ones?)?

Not too sure on which way to go with this one. Two short ones are good as they give you a chance to look at different topics but I don't like the fact that I can't do two of the same format as I basically had to do the first two options as I'm not an artistic person. On the otherhand if it was a long one. You would do it and then you could forget about it as that's the assesment complete giving you time to concentrate on other modules. I think I am drawn towards two assignments tho. If you make mistakes on your first one you can learn from them on your second and have a better idea on what is expected of you.

What have you learned from the module?

I have learn't information about the different topics and realised my views and opinions on them that I wouldn't of if I hadn't of been encouraged to do so.

What parts of the module have you found most useful and why?

I like the infidelity, masturabtion, tattoos and bad cinema lectures. They gave me information that I didn't know before.

What parts do you think were a waste of time and why?

The religous lecture. Alton towers although I didn't go I found it was an excuse for a day out.

Are there any other comments you wish to make regarding Being Bad?

Lectures ran over slightly, sometimes because of breaks being longer than they should of, sometimes because lectures didn't start on time because lecturers were late.

The last session

Well the last session of the module has arrived and I can't believe it really it's happened so quick.
It was interesting to find out what others thought of the module, what they liked and disliked.
I have to say I quite like the blogs, I didn't at first but after the problems I had were sorted out I was fine. I think it is a good opportunity to say what you think especially if you have problems in being able to do it in such a big group in lectures. Someone mentioned in the lecture that they thought it was a waste of time as the criteria is based on how many blogs you ahve written rather than the content and not all of them are going to be read. I agree with this to a certain extent but by writing a blog you get out of it what you put in. if you are looking on the internet to get links you may find information which could help you in your assignments as it may give you information or ideas of things to write about surely this is a good thing.
I do agree on the otherhand tho that all you have to do is sit at a computer and get as many blogs done to get a higher grade which isn't going to be looked at.
As for assignments I have difficulty in the fact that to a certain extent you can write about what you wish and when I did I seemed to have chosen something which was felt was not very important. Also information about what to write in film reviews etc seemed to be up for discussion and I was getting different information which obviously confused me. Maybe more of this in the evaluation.

Examples of lies

There are many different lies that people tell, some a lot worse than others and as I've mentioned before little white lies.
I'm sure many people have lied once in their life whether it be a big fat one of a tiny one or a white lie. I think that the years of enjoyment a child has in waiting for Santa and writing letters to him and visiting him in his grotto surely outweighs the day when they are probably a lot older when they find out that it was untrue. I am a commitee member for the local carnival and every Christmas we take Father Christmas around the streets to visit children, all the families are out waiting for him, even the OAP's all want to talk to him and maybe give him a hug. Everyone is in the Christmas spirit and they all enjoy it. I don't see how this is wrong. To see the enjoyment and excitment on children's faces tells me that telling this white lie is a good thing.

Telling lies with integrity

So what is lying? Well not telling the truth certainly. But sometimes someone may feel that they are telling the truth that they believe, if it then turns out to be false does that mean that that person has lied. I do not think so really as they didn't do it intentionally.
I surpose the reason lying is wrong is that if it was ever found out, people would be hurt. If the lie isn't found out the person who told the lie still feels they have an advantage over that other person and how they can get them to believe something that isn't true.
Here's a reason why lying to a child could be bad.
Copper Instead of child feeling they could go to a policemen for help if they need it they will become afrid of them

Murder
Behaving Badly

Well I've just been reading Nichola King's blog Nicki's blog I have to say she raises some very interesting points. I have got to agree with her when she talks of Jamie Bulger and his killers. At the end of the day those children killed him and in my opinion they should be punished for it. Like Nichola says they are now free to get on with the rest of their life they have had new identity's, they are 21 so they have a massive number of years to live. I just pity the girls that come into contact with them and hope that none actually form a relationship with them because after all how are they to know who they really are. I wonder if they would like children in the future and how they would feel to think that someone could be so sick as to do to their children what they did to Jamie Bulger.
As for not knowing what they were doing I'm sure they did most children know at that age what is right and wrong.
Changing the subject slightly I think the reason crimes are carried out by children is because they know the law is there to protect them against being punished for it. Like in a school environment children know they can misbehave as they know teachers cant do a thing to stop it. I worked in a school last year as a teacher assistant and the children will turn round and say what you going to do about it hit me and I'll get you the sack and sue you. If they know this it's obvious they are going to try their luck. All the punishment a teacher can do is hand out a detention that the child doesn't turn up for, keep them behind at dinner but only for some of the time as they have a right to dinner or have them suspended great the child thinks a holiday.

Stupid laws

I've just looked at Laurie Richards' blog Click here to view I found it very fasinating some of the stupid laws that exist like placing a postage stamp that bears the Queen (or King) upside down is considered treason, it is illegal to stand within one hundred yards of the reigning monarch when not wearing socks (enacted by Edward VI) I'm sorry but I think these are a bit silly instead of making silly laws like this shouldn't we be consentrating more on tackling crime and getting criminals put away.

Joining a religious cult/being 'too religious'

Today we did about Being too religious.
I was very surprised and shocked at the way George started the lecture with a prayer and lots of people made their comments on why it was wrong for him to do this. I was a bit uncomfortable to start with as I didn't know how to react to what he was doing and I think a lot of people thought this.
I think a lot of people do think it is un trendy to be religious when we used to be in assemblies at school and we had to sing hymns there were only certain people that would sing, the others either totally refused not to and tried to stay out of view of teachers or sang unwillingly or made it into some joke.
I was very surprised at the amount of people on the survey who said they believed in God, I think on the other hand if they had asked how many people believe themselves to be Christians it may have been slightly lower and if you compare the amount of people who believe in God to how many go to church regularly it is very different. This shows that people do not put God who they believe ion first on a Sunday.
I was very interested in talking about Jehovah's Witnesses. I do not for a minute mind what people believe in but I do not like people forcing me to listen to what they believe in. I have to admit we either shut the door on them if they do not get the message that we do not wish to listen or if we know that they are in the street we ignore the door.
I had to smile when George was talking about telling them not to come to your house anymore as one day my dad had had enough of them coming to our house and so he asked them if they had a book or something that we could go on to say we just were not interested, they replied yes so my dad asked to be put on it. Great we thought no more visits but then a bit later, they came knocking at the door. My dad told them that he was on this list and there response was they thought we may have changed our minds. What's the point in the book if that is what they are going to do?
I once heard of a story when they went to someone's house on Christmas Day!!!! I'm sorry but I think this is totally unacceptable.
It works the other way really would they like it if I went round to their houses and try and started preaching to them about their faith is wrong and they should all become Christians? No I do not so I do not think they should either.
I also have to agree that people who preach in the streets are a pain why should I have to walk around them to get to where I want to go, why can't I just shop in peace, catalogue people and accident groups are just as bad.

Drugs, rape and violence

As the film dealt with issues such as drugs, rape, violence and such I thought I would find a bit of information off the web.
This is a picture of someone taking drugs.
taking drugs
This is one of violence that happens in society.
violence
If you are a victim of violence the website for the National Domestic Violence Helpline (NDVH) can help. She didn't want to but after a while of the pressure from her friends she went to these men. They each in turn raped her in an alley. After it had happened she beat up the ring leader of the group. later they spoke to each other and she said that she hadn;t wanted it to lead as far as it did she didn't want her first time to happen like that, but it was all excuses. I think the ending of the film was not very good. I was waiting to see what she was going to do to Telly who she caught the STD from. I expected her to get her revenge. The beginning of the film set up the whole story of what was going to happen really. There wasn't any kind of lead up it was just straight to the point.
I have to say I was very shocked at the attitude that the teenagers in the film had. They were of the age of about 13 and 14 and they talked about sex like a child would talk about their favourite toy or television programme.
Telly doesn't have any concern for any other person he doesn't use protection and is just concerned about the next girl who he wants to talk into bed. Ranging from bullying to vandalism to tempers to being naughty.
Bullying can obviously hurt other people, their feelings. No one likes being called names.
Vandalism I mentioned earlier this can destroy people's property. It can hurt people especially if the item ruined had some meory attached to it maybe someone who has died for instance.
Tempers and bad behaviour can hurt people if they lash out at others.
People who steal from people like if someones house is burgled isn't nice either. They feel that their house is not their home anymore as someone has entered their house without permission and looked into their private things. Not only do people take away things but they also cause damage to things that to them isn't worth anything. The problem is it obvious meant something to the person who it belonged to. Say a photograph that has been crumpled up.

Vandalism

I know this topic hasn't or isn't going to be covered in the module but I thought I would find some other types of bad behaviour.
I thought about vandalism, such as graffiti. You always get it at school don't you (oh memories of school lol) anyway there's always someone to write on the back of the toilet door (I have to add I was never one of these) with some inscription to who they are in love with this time or that they were in this particular toilet at this time on this day. Then there's always the comment about someone being a tart or a bitch(you get the drift). This happens elsewhere also walls of buildings, bus shelters, subways, even on the back of seats on buses. As well as lamp posts and even on the climbing frames at the park.
Although some of it can be quite artistic it's still bad as it is basically criminal damage.
Anyway here are some examples.
gaffiti

Tattoos and body piercings

Thought that I might have a look at the kinds of body piercings and tattoos there are around. I certainly agree with Leanne Boyd click here to view about the term for masturbation, Gusset Typing as being disgusting and having a dislike to it. it was intersting to hear that I was not the only one to not know that Turning Japanese was about masturbation. It was quite funny when she said that she bopped away to it in the nightclub and guess the lecture will stick in her mind now especially the next time she bops away to this song.
I wander hopw many other people actually knew that this was what it was talking about. I asked my family most of them didn't know either apart from my slightly older cousin.
I wasn't able to make the lecture on smoking so I thought I'd get a bit of information from other people through there blogs.
Joseph Platel click here to view makes an interesting point on reasons why he thinks that people smoke. I agree that he can be done because of bordom maybe even people do it not becasue they feel they want to smoke a cigarette but because its a habit for example I know a lot of people that actually have a cigarette straight after a meal.
Joanne Forman's blog click here to have a look whether true or not just shows how one act can easily lead to another. she says how she needs money for cigarettes and hides from site of the conductor as shes spent what money she had left on that craving. this could be said for loads more habits, sex with prostitutes and drugs etc.
What about that advert there is now with the fat coming out of the cigarette. We were warned last week that there were going to be pictures and there was. Some worse than others.
It was interesting to find out the reasons why people actually do these. For example body as text, form of control and memorial decoration.
I assume that most people would agree that piercing such as ear lobe piercing and tongue and nose piercing would be seen as ok. I guess this is because a lot of people have them now and there are new ways and places that people have them now which people can be more outraged about rather than a lobe piercing.
I remember a statement my grandad once said that if your body was meant to have holes for piercing then they would have been there when you were born. I don't think this meant that he was actually against anyone having piercing but I guess it could be a view point from a religious prospective.

Assignments

Well the assignments are in. I finally decided to do an essay. I don't know what other people's views are but I would much prefer to have a set of questions to choose from rather than making my own up. Anyway I thought back to the lecture on infidelity Jackie posed the question if we think sex with a prostitute is infidelity so I used this as a starting point to make a question. I soon found tho that 600 words is no where near enough to write about this subject there is so many angles to look at it from, male, female, single, in a relationship, if the partner agreed to the act, a religious point of view, if there were sexual problems in a realtionship and so forth. I think we all knew this was going to be a (shall we say) interesting topic.
We spoke about the different terms that people use instead of saying the word masturbation. Although some of them I had heard before others were totally new to me. Some of the names mentioned included Bashing the Bishop, Tossing off, five knuckle shuffle and more obscure ones like yaffling the yoghurt and choking the chicken. Most of the terms are actually for men. I think this shows that in my opinion society are more comfortable with men masturbating then women. It is also shown that society does not accept this fully as when talking about masturbation it is usually in a joke and very comical.
I think the use of film and song in the lectures are a very good idea, like in this lecture with the songs relating to masturbation.
I found the lyrics to Chuck Berry's songs if ,anyone's intereted in reading them.
Berry's lyrics
Here also are the lyrics to I touch myself .
vinyls

Bandits and Outlaws

Today was about Bandits and Outlaws. The most obvious character that you think of would be Robin Hood. Stealing from the rich to give to the poor. Is this a bad thing, after all he was not doing it for any personal gain he was doing it to help people.
Other examples are Ned Kelley, Jesse James and P.B.Floyd. Were these characters seen as heroes? Our thoughts were that bandits were kind of looked up to as they had confidence and people might like to associate with them as they know they will be looked after. They can gain a kind of street cred and look cool by hanging around with people with this type of background. These people look after the community and their own. They might be admired because they have the courage to do things, such as robbery that other people may not have.
Kelley was killed by Bob Ford here is a picture of both men.Jesse James
Bob Ford

Alton Towers
B.Q Test
Infidelity

Well it's week 4 of the module. last week the group went to Alton Towers for the day. I didn't go mainly because I do not like rides. I did amaze myself tho as I managed to do a fair bit of work. I did the B.Q test on WOLF but unfortunately only got 20% correct.
Today we have been talking about Infidelity. What is infidelity? Well I think that overall being unfaithful and breaking promises sum it up. By being unfaithful to someone you are betraying their trust. I myself have never cheated and I don't think that I could. I think if you are not happy with a relationship you should end it before you find a new one, that way you are not betraying anyone.
The question was asked in the lecture on whether sex with a prostitute is being unfaithful? In my opinion it is. You are still going behind someone's back and doing something you know that they will not like. If there is a case that both partners of a relationship are aware that both parties are seeing other people then that would not be cheating because both have consented to it. Is having sex with a prostitute worse than having a relationship with another person? Having sex with a prostitute is just so you can have sex there is a no feeling or emotional ties but if you start an affair, a relationship with someone then you do have feelings towards that person when you should only have feelings for the person you are with. If someone cheated on me I do not know which one would hurt me the most because I would be hurt by both of them

My first link

I had a few difficulties in the session trying to follow all the instructions and actually set up a weblog but I did finally get my head around it so I thought I would have a go at the next thing to do, so I am going to attempt to add a link so I hope it works.Being Bad home page

My very first blog

Well our first lecture on Being Bad was very interesting I have to say. I think we were all amused when we wrote down the worst thing we had ever done and then after distributing them out read each others. Some were not as bad as others but the question has to be asked if everyone told the truth or were they being bad and wanting us to believe that it was true. I have to say that I dont believe some of them at all.
